Christchurch to Queenstown 2 Day Tour via Franz Josef
The best thing about this two-day South Island crossing is how much scenery you see without having to drive it yourself. You move from Christchurch’s plains over Arthur’s Pass, along the wild West Coast, past glaciers and rainforest, then into the dry mountain country around Wanaka and Queenstown. It is a long road trip, but the road is the point.
I love the small group limit of 15 and the useful mix of short photo stops and proper walks. I also like that this is a one-way trip, so you do not waste time retracing your route. Guides such as Rosie, Noah, Carl, Lynette, Clive, Hannah, and Albert have been praised for keeping the days moving while sharing local detail.
The main catch is the pace. This is roughly 12 hours each day, with about six hours on the road and six hours exploring. Roads are winding, the walks require moderate fitness, and you must arrange your own Franz Josef accommodation.
Key points to know before booking

- Castle Hill and Arthur’s Pass give you an early taste of limestone country, tussock hills, alpine views, and one of the South Island’s best short waterfall walks.
- Hokitika Gorge and Lake Matheson are the photographic highlights, with turquoise water at the gorge and possible Mount Cook reflections at the lake.
- The West Coast is the real star, combining black-sand beaches, rainforest, open Tasman Sea views, and glacier country.
- The overnight stop is in Franz Josef, not Fox Glacier, so book accommodation in the correct village.
- The trip is practical as transport, linking Christchurch and Queenstown while covering sights that are awkward to reach without a car.
- Expect long days, limited free time, no onboard restroom, and one large plus one small bag per person.
Why this Christchurch to Queenstown route works
At $359.93 per person, this tour costs more than simply buying a bus ticket between the two cities. But it is not just transport. You get a guided route through several major South Island regions, water and snacks, two lunches, short walks, photo stops, and accommodation drop-off in central Franz Josef and Queenstown.
The value depends on your plans. If you only need to get from Christchurch to Queenstown, a basic transport option may be cheaper. If you want to see Castle Hill, Arthur’s Pass, Hokitika Gorge, Lake Matheson, Haast, Wanaka, and Cardrona without hiring a car, the price becomes easier to justify.
The van carries no more than 15 people, which matters on a route with frequent stops. You spend less time organizing your own navigation and more time looking out the window. The guides also help turn what could be a long transfer into a moving introduction to the South Island.
The timing is demanding. The first pickup is at 7:30 a.m. from the Bus Interchange on Lichfield Street in central Christchurch. The two days are full, and the tour duration includes all driving between stops. Pack for a road trip, not a leisurely stay in each town.

Day one: from Christchurch through Arthur’s Pass

The morning begins as the vehicle leaves Christchurch and heads toward the Southern Alps. The first stop is Lake Lyndon, near Porters Pass, where a five-minute pause gives you a quick look at a tussock-country lake known for rainbow trout fishing.
Lake Lyndon is a small stop, not a major attraction. Its value is that it breaks up the opening drive and gives you an early sense of the high-country setting. You will not have time for fishing, and the visit is mainly for a photograph and fresh air.
Castle Hill’s strange limestone shapes
You get about an hour at Castle Hill, one of the more memorable stops on the first day. Weathered limestone formations rise from tussock-covered hills, their unusual shapes formed from rock that once lay beneath the sea.
This is a good place to walk around rather than simply take one quick photograph. The open setting gives you room to see the formations from different angles, and the stop adds geology to a day otherwise focused on scenery. Wear shoes with a decent grip, as the ground around the rocks may be uneven.
Arthur’s Pass and Devils Punchbowl
At Arthur’s Pass Village, the Southern Alps feel close and substantial. You have about an hour here, with the option to walk the Devils Punchbowl track or spend the time in the village.
The Devils Punchbowl walk takes about an hour and includes a gradual climb with steps through bush and forest. It leads to a 131-meter waterfall. The walk is rated low to moderate in fitness, but do not treat that as a completely effortless stroll. The limited time means you need to keep moving if you want to complete the route and return on schedule.
This is one of the better planned stops because it gives you an actual walk instead of a string of roadside viewpoints. If the weather is poor, the waterfall may still be impressive, though wet paths and steps can make the walk less comfortable.

Otira Viaduct and the road west
The Otira Viaduct Lookout, sometimes called Deaths Corner, gets only about 10 minutes. That is enough for a photograph and a look across Arthur’s Pass National Park, but not enough for lingering.
The viaduct is 440 meters long and allows the road to cross difficult mountain country. The viewpoint helps explain why this route is such an engineering feat, though the stop itself is brief. Keep your camera ready because the van will not wait for a long photo session.
Day one on the West Coast: Greymouth, Hokitika, and the gorge

Greymouth receives about an hour. It is the largest town on the West Coast, and this is a practical pause for food, supplies, or a short walk before the smaller coastal stops begin.
Next comes Cobden Beach, with only five minutes for a quick look. The beach has a rock breakwater and can offer a strong coastal photograph, particularly when waves meet the structure. It is not a long beach visit, so think of it as a scenic pause.
You then have around 30 minutes in Hokitika. This gives you time to see the black-sand beach, photograph the well-known Hokitika sign, and browse a few local art shops. Hokitika is a pleasant change from the mountain road, but half an hour disappears quickly. Choose one priority rather than trying to do everything.
Hokitika Gorge’s turquoise water
The one-hour visit to Hokitika Gorge is a major reason to choose this route. The gorge is known for striking turquoise water surrounded by native bush, and the color can look almost unreal in the right conditions.
The walk gives you a better experience than a roadside stop because you have time to see the water from more than one point. Conditions and light affect the color, so do not expect every photograph to match the famous images you may have seen. Still, this is one of the most distinctive sights on the trip.
Lake Ianthe follows with a five-minute stop. The lake is surrounded by hills and podocarp forest, with wetland habitat and birdlife. It is a quiet final pause before Franz Josef, rather than a headline attraction.
Arriving in Franz Josef
The first day ends with drop-off at your Franz Josef accommodation. The tour does not provide lodging, so you need to book it separately and book in Franz Josef rather than Fox Glacier. Drop-off in Fox Glacier is not available.
This overnight stop is important because it prevents the entire Christchurch to Queenstown journey from becoming one exhausting day. It also gives you a chance to eat, rest, and prepare for another early start. Central accommodation is the practical choice, since the second-day pickup is from central Franz Josef.
Day two: Lake Matheson and the southern West Coast

Day two begins at your Franz Josef accommodation and heads south. The first stop is Lake Matheson, with about an hour for the walk.
Lake Matheson is famous for possible reflections of Mount Cook and the Southern Alps on calm water. The easy bushwalk provides the time and setting for one of the trip’s best photographs. The key word is calm. Wind or cloud can erase the reflection, but the walk remains worthwhile for its forest and lake views.
This is also one of the stops where an early start helps. The schedule cannot control the weather, but quieter conditions often make a lake reflection more likely. Bring a camera, but also enjoy the walk if the mirror effect does not appear.
Bruce Bay and Ship Creek
Bruce Bay takes about 10 minutes. Here, native rainforest meets the open Tasman Sea, giving you a clear view of the West Coast’s contrast: dense forest on one side and a broad, rough ocean on the other.
Ship Creek allows about 30 minutes. You can walk near the shore, feel the sand, and watch the waves along this section of rainforest coast. This is a good place to stretch your legs after the van ride, but it is not a long beach outing.
The West Coast is at its best in these simple moments. You are not being rushed through a museum or packed into a town center. You get short contact with places that feel remote, even when the schedule allows only a brief visit.
Lunch at The Hard Antler
Lunch is provided at The Hard Antler, with about 45 minutes for the stop. The meal is a free choice from a set menu, so you have some choice without the delay of a fully independent restaurant search.
Two lunches are included in the tour, one on each day. Accommodation, drinks beyond the supplied water and snacks, and other personal purchases are not listed as included. If you have special food needs, check before departure rather than relying on the set menu to cover them.
Thunder Creek Falls and Haast country
Thunder Creek Falls requires only about a five-minute walk and gives you around 20 minutes at the stop. The 28-meter waterfall drops from a hanging valley into the Haast River, with a quick path making it one of the easiest high-reward stops of the trip.
This is exactly the sort of attraction that is hard to fit into an independent transfer. You get a proper look without needing to find parking, read road directions, or work out whether the walk is open.
Lake Hawea, Wanaka, and the final run to Queenstown

As the route leaves the national park, you stop at a Lake Hawea lookout for about 10 minutes. The view is a quick reminder that the scenery is changing again, from wet coastal forest to open inland lakes and mountains.
Wanaka receives only about 15 minutes, which is enough to walk toward the lakeside and photograph the famous Wanaka Tree. You can also see the broad lake backed by Mount Aspiring and the Southern Alps.
The short stay is the main weakness here. Wanaka deserves much longer if you want cafés, shops, or a proper lakeside walk. On this tour, it is a taste rather than a full visit. Still, it is a worthwhile inclusion because the setting is so different from the West Coast.
Cardrona’s old hotel
The final scenic stop is Cardrona, where you have about 10 minutes to see the Cardrona Hotel. This old building is one of New Zealand’s best-known roadside landmarks, with a rustic look that makes for an easy photograph.
From Cardrona, the vehicle crosses the Crown Range Road toward Queenstown. Your guide points out key sights on the way into town before dropping you at central Queenstown accommodation, or the closest practical alternative if your lodging is outside the central area.
What the guides and vehicle add

The guide can make or break a road trip with this much driving. The available guide roster includes Rosie, Noah, Carl, Lynette, Clive, Hannah, and Albert, depending on the departure. Rosie has been praised for punctuality and for keeping the first day on track to reach Franz Josef around 6:30 p.m. Other guides have been noted for being kind, well informed, and good at explaining the route.
That consistency matters because the schedule leaves little room for delays. A guide who manages time well protects your walks and photo stops. You should still expect some variation caused by road conditions, weather, and how long the group takes at each stop.
The Mercedes Sprinter van has been described as well appointed and in excellent condition. The group size is capped at 15, but the exact feel of the ride depends on how full the departure is. There is no restroom onboard, so use facilities whenever you stop in a town or at a visitor area.
Luggage space allows one large and one small bag per person. Keep your camera, water, jacket, and any walking essentials in the small bag so you do not need to access the main luggage during the day.
Who should book this two-day trip

I would choose this tour if you want to connect Christchurch and Queenstown while seeing the South Island’s western side. It suits you especially well if you do not want to rent a car, prefer a small group, and value guided stops over having complete control of the schedule.
It is also a strong choice for photographers. Castle Hill, Hokitika Gorge, Lake Matheson, Bruce Bay, Wanaka, and Cardrona offer very different subjects in just two days.
I would hesitate if you dislike long drives, need generous time in each town, or want to hike beyond short walks. The tour requires moderate physical fitness, and the Devils Punchbowl walk includes steps and an incline. Children aged seven and under must use a safety seat, which can be hired for $20 NZD per seat or supplied by you.
The cancellation terms are fairly useful: you can receive a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before the start time. Weather or minimum-group issues can also lead to a different date or a full refund, according to the operator’s conditions.
Should you book it?

Book this tour if your priority is seeing the route rather than simply covering the distance. The itinerary packs in a remarkable range of South Island scenery, and the Franz Josef overnight stop makes the journey far more manageable than doing it in one push.
Do not book it expecting a relaxed holiday or long stays in Wanaka, Hokitika, or Greymouth. You will spend much of both days in the van, and the schedule rewards punctuality. For a well-organized, small-group route through Arthur’s Pass, the West Coast, Haast, and the Southern Lakes, it offers strong value at $359.93, provided you are comfortable with the pace.
